Mexican Hat wins her Woodbine Debut

Previously raced in France, Mexican Hat, made her Woodbine debut a winning one for her new owners Narola LLC and Anderson Farms Ontario Inc. and new Trainer Catherine Day Phillips.

The 4 year-old Street Cry (IRE) filly last raced October 30, 2017 in the Prix de Belle Englise Handicap at Chantilly where she finished third for her previous owners.

Mexican Hat joined the stable of Trainer Catherine Day Phillips at Palm Meadows in Florida this winter training well into this debut 1 1/16 mile Maiden Allowance for $61,000 at Woodbine for her new connections.

Ridden by Jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva, Mexican Hat sat off the pace making a three wide bid on the turn driving to the lead mid stretch to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

In the seventh race the Michael Iavarone, Jules Iavarone and Duncan Lloyd owned, Cousin Claire, made ground after being blocked mid stretch to finish a strong third in the $62,300 Allowance Optional Claiming race with jockey Gary Boulanger aboard.

Coming off a win on April 29, Little Christy, owned by Kevin & Kate Cullen and Samotowka Stable stepped back up to face stakes company in the Ballade Stakes. After pressing the early pace she finished out of contention.

Saturday’s Action:
Catherine’s barn was alight on Saturday with each runner giving it their all to finish well in all three races.

Dixie Moon was all heart in the feature race, the G3 Selene Stakes, for 3 year-old fillies. Owned and bred by Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry, the talented filly finished second by a neck after a driving stretch run and duel with Jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva aboard.

The Fitzhenry’s Guy Caballero was competitive in the ninth, a $62,000 Allowance, his first start of 2018. With jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva aboard, Guy Caballero came from off the pace with a rousing run on the inside to finish a close third, only 3/4 lengths off the winner.

And Uncle Lou, owned by Anderson Farms Ontario Inc, Brian Ledson, Michael Barr and Dean Karachi, with Eurico Rosa da Silva aboard raced back of the pack in the 14 horse  10th race, making up tremendous ground in the stretch to finish driving fourth.
