Woodbine’s female trainers crash Breeders’ Cup party

Third trip to thoroughbred racing’s showcase for Catherine Day Phillips and Josie Carroll, in a year with no female riders on the 13-race weekend card.

Of the 162 racehorses entered in this weekend’s 34th Breeders’ Cup world championships at Del Mar racetrack in San Diego, just three are trained by women.

Two of them, Catherine Day Phillips and Josie Carroll, are Ontario residents hailing from Woodbine racetrack.

Day Phillips, a third-generation trainer, had Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry’s Dixie Moon entered in Friday’s $1-million Juvenile Fillies Turf on day one of the thoroughbred racing showcase, while Carroll will send out Ami’s Mesa, owned by Ivan Dalos, in Saturday’s $1-million Filly and Mare Sprint.
