After a dazzling second and two wins today at Woodbine it was clear that trainer Catherine Day Phillips had her runners ready for their first starts of the 2019 Woodbine meet.
Five year-old gelding, Split My Pants, showcased his late speed, finishing like a train, to get up for second in the 7 furlong $67,500 Allowance fourth race. Accustomed to going longer, Split My Pants was coming off a win at a mile and an eighth late last season. Owners Doug Anderson, Rita Eskudt, Peter Mosakos, Catherine’s Kingfield Racing Stable and Carnegie Hill Stable were pleased with the effort.
In the ninth race owners Doug Anderson, Rita Eskudt, Kingfield Racing Stable and 2413436 Ontario Inc. had their pictures taken after Smooth Talk (photo above) stepped up to win the 7 furlong $42,500 Optional Claiming race. With a wire to wire trip with Jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson aboard, the now 4 year-old gelding was also coming off a win late last season where he competed for a $16,000 tag at the same distance.
Going off as the even odds favourite, three year-old filly, Notice Me did not disappoint taking the lead mid stretch and held on to win the tenth by half a length with Jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva aboard. Finishing fourth in her last start, the Ontario Lassie Stakes last December, today’s win in the $42,500 Optional Claiming race was the second of her career. Notice Me owned by Catherine’s Kingfield Racing Stable Ltd., P.A. Fullerton Stables Inc. and Peter C. Reich.
